Bible Marathon

A few Saturdays ago, on the 2nd of January, our family hosted our first Bible Marathon. The marathon lasted about six hours, four of which we spent reading. Mom got the idea for it from Gary Friesen’s book, Decision Making and the Will of God . A couple other families joined us, as we read through Luke, and about three-quarters of Revelation. Kentucky Mountain Mission 2009

This Columbus Day weekend I went on a five day mission’s trip to Beattyville, Kentucky. This is the 6th annual free dental clinic that this group has done. I went the first time in 2004, with my home church, Family Bible Fellowship. I was really impressed with the need of the people there, not just for free dental care, but also the gospel. Beep, Beep, Beep… My alarm went off at 5:30 AM. Remembering that Jon and I had planned to leave for the Wilkes land in just half an hour, I jumped out of bed. We quickly got ready, completed the final packing, and then settled back for the peaceful one hour trip. A couple hours later we were encouraged with a round-the-campfire wisdom search. Scenes & Highlights from Family Encouragment Weekend

This is the second annual weekend long conference. It was designed to encourage families to shine their lights in their local communities, and to become more closely knit together as a whole family. Here are a couple points that encouraged me particularly.

“We should not be trying to achieve balance between our career, and our family. The question should be one of priority - Matthew 6:33 "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” If we seek first the kingdom of God, caring for our family will naturally flow out of that.

Prayer is powerful. Many places where persecution is the hottest are also places where the Christians are ‘on fire for God’. These Christians' prayers are desperate - if God doesn’t answer their prayers, there’s nowhere else to turn. I think of Brother Andrew’s stories as great examples of this. If God is our last resort, why not make Him our first resort.

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16
